Mr. Gilman was the principal of the school where Helen was studying to prepare herself to enter Radcliffe. He had formed an idea that Miss Sullivan was pressurizing Helen to work very hard. He wanted her to stay in his school for three years more. He reduced the number of her recitations. Meanwhile Helen fell ill and Mr Gilman thought it was because of the pressure of her studies. So he made elaborate changes in her study programme. It was so much shortened that Helen could not take her final exam with her class. This created difference of opinion between Mr Gilman and Miss Sullivan due to which Helen's mother decided to withdraw Helen and Mildred from the Cambridge school.
