Mr. Otis was the American Minister. He had a scientific outlook on life. He did not believe in supernatural phenomena. He was honest, fearless, responsible, and quite loving.

He was a man who followed his heart. When he set his heart on Canterville Chase, he went ahead with the purchase deal in spite of Lord Canterville’s dissuading. The fact that the Chase was haunted couldn’t deter him from buying the Chase. Even his first meeting with the ghost failed to frighten him; rather he categorically told the ghost not to make any noise. He allowed him to roam as much as he liked in the Chase on the condition of not disturbing him and his family. He also offered him the Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator, which he refused to accept.

As a father he was quite loving, caring and dedicated. He forgot everything when Virginia was lost temporarily. He searched every place around the Chase to find his beloved daughter. And when she reappeared, he was extremely happy. Thus Mr. Otis was not only a great human being, but a wonderful father also.
