After Robespierre'srule came to an end directory created instability:

* in 1804 Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself emperor of France.

* he conquered many neighbouring countries and placed members of his family on the Crown.

* Napoleon saw himself as a moderniser of Europe.

* he introduced many laws such as the protection of private properties and the uniform system of measures and weight.

* he established friendly relations with the Pope.

* under his rule a new constitution was formed, as a result of which four legislative bodies and three executive bodies were established.

* initially, many welcome Napoleon as the liberator who would bring freedom for the people. But soon the Napoleon army is came to be viewed as an invading force everywhere.

* he was finally defeated at Waterloo in 1815.
