The narrator of the story came across as a thorough gentleman himself. He exhibits a politeness and refinement of character which is to be seen in hid demeanor. He has the subtlety of understanding that makes him look beyond the shabby appearance of the two and see the strength of the character. He respected their feelings and sentiments which they depicted by not disclosing their problem in front of the narrator, the narrator merely focused on their high level of self - dignity and nobility that they exhibited.
