The merchant was a rich person who traveled from place to place with his merchandise and camels. He was also an honest person as can be seen how he handed over the bracelet to the princess as per Wali Dad’s instruction. Although he could have kept the bracelet with himself and sold it to make a little fortune, he did not do so. Similarly, he did not keep the princess’s return gift for himself. Moreover, he readily obliged to do all that Wali Dad asked him to do. However, he did not wish to portray his friend Wali Dad in poor light to the rich princess. So, he said that the sender had heard stories of the princess that made him want to send gifts to her.

Merchant in Wali dad story is someone who is very honest as we can tell in the story.  When the Princess sent for the merchant and questioned him about the giver.

 Since the merchant was usually a most honest man he did not quite want to describe Wali dad in his true light as an old man whose income was five pence a day and who had hardly clothes to wear so he told her that his friends had heard stories of her beauty and goodness, and had longed to lay the best he had at her feet
