The rough endoplasmic reticulum is especially prominent in cells such as hepatocytes. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum lacks ribosomes and functions in lipid synthesis but not metabolism, the production of steroid hormones, and detoxification. The smooth ER is especially abundant in mammalian liver and gonad cells.

Hey dude,

❦It often appears as two interconnected sub-compartments, namely rough ER and smooth ER.

❦Both types consist of membrane enclosed, interconnected flattened tubes.

❦The rough ER, studded with millions of membrane bound ribosomes, is involved with the production, folding, quality control and despatch of some proteins.
