Answer:

Enzymes speed up reactions by bringing reactants together and reducing the activation energy required to start the reaction (enzymatic reaction). Enzymes are specific: they have a specific shape, therefore only a certain substrate will fit its active site.

Characteristics of enzyme catalysis

(1) They are highly efficient. One molecule of an enzyme can transform molecules of reactants per minute.

(2) They are highly specific in nature e.r., urease catalyses hydrolysis of urea only.

(3) They are active at optimum temperature. The rate of enzyme catalysed reaction decreases with increase in temperature i.e. hot milk does not change into cure easily.

(4) They are most active at specific pH called optimum pH. The amylase becomes inactive in acidic pH.

(5) Enzymatic activity can be increased in presence of coenzymes which can be called as promoters. Activators are generally metal ions. The use of many drugs is related to their action as enzyme inhibitors in the body.
