Characteristics of parenchyma :

• Parenchyma consists of living cells.

• The intercellular space is present.

• Cell wall is thin without having Secondary deposition.

• Cell contain cytoplasm.

• Cell wall doesn't have pits.

• They have vital functions like synthesis and storage of food.

Parenchyma consists of two constituents. These are :

★ Chlorenchyma

★ Aerenchyma

1. They have isodiametric cells



2. They have thin walls made of cellulose



3. There is a large central vacuole in each cell



4. The cells are living and perform metabolic processes



5. Parenchyma is distributed in Cortex, pith, medullary rays in wood and as packing tissue in xylem and phloem.



6. In hydrophytes large air cavities are formed in-between these tissues. These types of tissues are called aerenchyma.



7. In leaf, these tissues contain chloroplasts and help in photosynthesis and are called collenchyma.



8. These tissues are mainly concerned in storage of food.



9. In fleshy stem, they act as water storage tissues.
