complex character-
shylock is a complex character having contradictory qualities. He is bloodthristy, cunning, greedy and fanatical, yet he has been given the human touch of being an oppressed and much hated alien . Shakespeare's shylock is a towering personality bearing both intellectual strength and strength of purpose. He is an obstacle hindering the love of the young lovers in the play.
revangeful-
shylock's life is dominated by his passion for revange,money , his race , and religion.The centuries of oppression of his jewish race by the Christians has embittered his soul. Unaccepted and insulted in the Christian society, he seeks an opportunity to harm a Christian, namely Antonio
Passion for money-
his passion for money is intensive. when his daughter elopes away with a Christian he is worried more about the loss of his money.
A devout jew-
shylock is a devout jew having a passion for his race and religion. He is the champion of his race and speaks eloquently about the injustices suffered by the jews.

shylock's inhumanity and revangefullness is seen all its fury in the trial scene.
arouses sympathy-he arouses sympathy for all he has undergone . He bears all the insults and humiliations for his jewish race.
