CHARACTERISTICS OF VIBRATIONS :-

★ Amplitude

• The maximum displacement from the mean position of the vibrating body is called Amplitude.

★ Frequency

• The number of cycles completed by a vibrating body in one second is called frequency.

\sf \longrightarrow Frequency= \dfrac{Number \: of \: cycles \: completed}{second}

• SI unit of frequency is Hertz (Hz).

★ Time period

• The time taken to complete one vibration is called time period.

• SI unit of time period: seconds.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND WAVE :-

★ Pitch

• The shrillness of a sound is called pitch.

• Pitch depends upon the frequency.

• If frequency is high, pitch is high (shrill sound, as in females); if frequency is low, pitch is low (flat or grave sound, as in males).

• Pitch \alpha frequency.

★ Loudness of a sound

• Loudness means how much energy the sound possesses.

• It depends upon the Amplitude.

• More the amplitude, more is the loudness and farther the sound will travel.

• It is proportional to the amplitude of the vibration producing the sound.

\sf LOUDNESS \: \alpha \: (AMPLITUDE) ^{2}

• Unit of loudness: DECIBEL (dB).

The area of vibrating body :-The more the area, the louder is sound. For example, a big drum produces a louder sound than a small drum.

The distance of the listener from the source of sound :- The nearer the source, the louder is the sound.

★ Quality of sound:-

• It is the characteristic of sound which enable us to distinguish between different sounds of same pitch and loudness produced by two different musical instruments or people can be distinguished.

• Quality of sound depends on the part of the musical instrument that vibrates with the string or the air column. The loudest and the lowest are called the fundamentals and the others are called harmonics or overtones.

• The quality of node depends on the nature and number of overtones which accompany the fundamental. The difference in the quality of various tones is indicated by a difference in their waveforms.
