Answer:

Halku is a tenant farmer - he grows crops on the land belonging to a landlord.

He works hard but the rewards are reaped by the land lord.

Basically he had to choose between a blanket which got along with it the insult by the landlord for not paying the lagaan (tax) or cold and chilly January nights in the field to guard it upholding his honour and pride.

He always had an option of chucking the job of farming and being a paid labour, but an Indian with any pride wouldn't do so in those times.

He upheld the same honour and pride by chucking the insults and choosing cold chilly nights in 'his fields'.

Finally, when a fire is caught in the field, he just 'let it happen' and take its course.

Haiku is the main character in the story 'January Nights' and following are the points as for his character sketch.

• Haiku is a tenant farmer and works on the land of his landlord and works for the landlord only.

• Haiku, as a farmer suffers at the hands of the landlord and is exploited by the landlord and all the profits, are rather taken over and used by the landlord only whereas Haiku suffers the exploitation.

• Haiku had tough choices to make in his life and lived the conflicts of life and had to make choices between self-respect and comforts of life.

• Haiku as a farmer had the fair option of shunning away his job or work under the landlord but he chose for true devotion and loyalty towards hard work.

• Haiku always upheld and took hold of his self-respect while keeping a strong hold on to the situations.

• However, in the tough times, he is forced to kneel down to the situations due to his poor situations and lack of stability, control, and resources.
