Cole Matthew’s Character Sketch!
From the novel Touching Spirit Bear Cole Matthews is not your average teenage boy, he is a juvenile delinquent. If you look at Cole you may see a sweet, innocent, kind, caring boy! He has a baby face, he’s 15, and uses it to get his way! Cole has committed many crimes in his life. He is an only child with two parents. His mom is very pretty, short, and hair that shines like gold. She dresses really good and try’s her best to impress. She doesn't stick up for Cole when he goes to circle justice, or when his dad beats on him. His dad is exceptionally strong and muscular. His dad beats on him, because he was beaten by his own father when he was little too. He also has two friends; there not really his friends but everyone considers them as friends. The first is Garvey; he is Cole’s parole officer. He watches Cole to make sure he stays out of trouble. The other is Edwin, he is the one that drives the skiff, and teaches Cole how to control his anger. Cole doesn't have an occupation, he only goes to school. Cole has a big background, he has gotten caught stealing, been sent to a drug councillor, and he has been breaking into stores! People don’t like Cole, and are usually scared of him! They are scared because of how severely he had beaten a student in his school! They also think he is a threat and a disgrace to his community.
Cole has a wide personality, he is uncaring, dishonest, unkind, immature, rude, undisciplined and many others. He also is frustrated and hates when people aren’t afraid of him. Cole likes being on people if they tattle on him or aren't afraid for no apparent reason. Cole likes to brag about the crimes he has committed. He dislikes that his parents are divorced, and when people call him champ. “Quit calling me champ” (page 15). Cole hates lawyers and people who pretend to care about him, when they really don’t. He thinks that people are just paid to do their job and pretend to care about Cole, but he knows no one cares about him. Cole’s doesn't have many fears, but he has one major fear the Spirit Bear. The other thing he’s scared of is being alone, no one caring about him anymore, and dying! Cole thinks that his best trait is being manipulative, rude, and disobeying everyone around him.
Cole’s behaviour throughout the book progresses and becomes better towards the end; at the beginning he is very bad and disrespectful towards his parents, Edwin, Garvey, and of course himself. Cole has a wide behavior, he is very angry and angered easily! He is angered by many things but anger is the major problem with himself. He has many other feelings deep inside of him; on the other hand he hates to admit it. He definitely has depression, sadness, and regret in himself. The only reason why he doesn't say anything and he pretends to be angered all the time is because he doesn’t want people to think he’s just like everyone else, he wants them to believe he’s stronger and more perfect. Cole talks about a lot through this book, like his parents, Peter, and at the start all the crimes he has committed. Peter is the boy that Cole beat up in the beginning of the book. Cole smashed his face into the cement several times and punched him many times in the face. At the end Cole feels bad for what he did to Peter, and regrets it. He gets upset thinking about his parents’ divorce, and why that happened. He thinks that if he was a better child that his dad would love him more than how much he loves him now. He talks about what he hates throughout the book and a couple of them were already mentioned. Cole also talks about the Spirit Bear, and how he can see him if he can become invisible.
Cole has had to overcome many things through this book. One of course is his anger. Throughout the book, his anger does progress and it gets better. He starts to realize that he can experience other feelings and it’s okay. At the end Cole and Peter start to talk and become better and Cole says that he can help Peter to get over his anger at Cole and that it can be improved. Cole says that he can prove to Peter that he won’t beat him up again, or get angry. His other problem he overcame is that he knows his parents are there for him. Cole has different qualities at the end then at the beginning, at the beginning of the book he is angry and rude and disrespectful. At the end he is kind, caring, and he starts to listen and be respectful to everyone… including himself.
