Both the above mention compounds are ionic. To form these compounds one element has to give electrons while the other has to take electrons
Zinc always gives 2 electrons ( because only then it will have a stable octet configuration) whereas sodium always gives 1 electron.
Chlorine takes 1 electron.
So, a when 1 atom of zinc loses 2 electrons, each one is gained by 2 chlorine atoms( 1 electron per atom)
When 1 atom of sodium loses 1 electron, one atom of chlorine gains it.
