Chemical name of Plaster of Paris is Calcium sulphate hemihydrate. When it is mixed with water, crystals of gypsum(CaSO4.2H2O ) are produced and set into hard mass.

Use of Plaster of Paris:

It is also used in medicine to make plaster casts to immobilize broken bones while they heal, though some orthopedic casts are made of fiberglass or thermoplastics

It is commonly used to precast and hold parts of ornamental plaster work placed on ceilings and cornices.
