the chemical properties of metals are listed below
- metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides for example 4Na+O2--------->2Na2O
- metals react with water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen whereas metals react with steam to form metal oxides and hydrogen
- the metals react with dilute acids to form metal salts and hydrogen
- reaction of metals with chlorine forms ionic chloride
- reaction of metals with hydrogen gives ionic hydride
properties of nonmetals are listed below
- action of non metals with oxygen gets acidic oxides or neutral oxides
- nonmetals do not react with water
- these don't react with dilute acids
- metals react with chlorine to form covalent chloride which are non electrolytes
- non metals react with hydrogen to form covalent hydrides
