the chemical properties of metals are listed below

  1. metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides for example 4Na+O2--------->2Na2O
  2. metals react with water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen whereas metals react with steam to form metal oxides and hydrogen
  3. the metals react with dilute acids to form metal salts and hydrogen
  4. reaction of metals with chlorine forms ionic chloride
  5. reaction of metals with hydrogen gives ionic hydride

properties of nonmetals are listed below

  1. action of non metals with oxygen gets acidic oxides or neutral oxides
  2. nonmetals do not react with water
  3. these don't react with dilute acids
  4. metals react with chlorine to form covalent chloride which are non electrolytes
  5. non metals react with hydrogen to form covalent hydrides
