Concentrated sulfuric acid is added tosucrose forming carbon, steam andsulfur dioxide. ... In the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid sucrose is dehydrated to produce carbon and water. The heat of the reactionvaporizes the water causing the column of carbon to form.
