Chemical Test

  • Iodoform Test.

Iodoform Test of Propan-2-ol

  • The compounds which give positive iodoform test are the one with alpha-methyl groups.
  • To be more precise, Ethanal(Acetaldehyde) and methyl ketones.
  • Ethanal is the only aldehyde which gives a positive iodoform test.
  • Thus, ketone and aldehyde with structure −COCH₃  also show positive results.
  • propan-2-ol is CH₃  − CH(OH) − CH₃  so it will have −COCH₃  group and hence gives a positive iodoform test.

Iodoform Test

  • It is used to check the presence of carbonyl compounds with the structure R-CO-CH₃ or alcohols with the structure R-CH(OH)-CH₃ in a given unknown substance.
  • The reaction of iodine, a base and a methyl ketone gives a yellow precipitate along with an antiseptic smell.
