b) 7.1 g of chlorine reacts completely with iron to form FeCl3
Calculate the i) weight of Fe required ii) weight of ferric chloride formed

Answer:

Fe + 3Cl  -->                     FeCl3                                                       Fe = 56

MM = 56 +35.5 x 3         MM = 56 +35.5 x 3                                  Cl = 35.5                                        

= 56 + 106.5                     = 56 + 106.5                                            

=162.5 amu                      =162.5 amu    

106.5g of Cl --> 162.5g of FeCl3

therefore 7.1g of Cl --> 162.5/106.5 x 7.1 (7.1 cancels 106.5 to get 15)

= 162.5/15 = 10.833g (33 is recurring)            

therefore weight of Fe =  Weight of Cl3 - Weight of Cl

= 10.833 - 7.1

=3.733 (33 is recurring again)
