Cherrapunji and Mawsynram receive more than 11000 mm of rainfall. Shillong located very near to these places receives only 1000mm of rainfall. What could be the reason?

Shillong receives less rainfall in comparison to Mawsynram and Cherrapunji because it lies on the leeward side and is located in the rain shadow region. ... This is because the city is situated on the leeward side of the hills of Khasi and is present in a unique zone known as the rain-shadow zone.

Explanation:

Because of orographic rainfall which held in most of the world, in Shillong there are many mountain ranges due to which the

mountain play role of forming windward side rainfall and leeward side rainfall, and also cherrapunji is wettest land in the world . HENCE THIS IS THE REASON FOR WHICH THERE IS LESS RAIN FALL AND heavy rain.
