when two non sister chromosomes are attached with each other in miosis call division they look like English letter X. That stage of chromosome is called chiasmata.

Chaismata is formed due to crossing over of two different chromosomes ( maternal and paternal) during pachytene of Meiosis 1.
It assumes a X Shaped structure. However, It is clearly seen in diplotene stage. The terminalization of chaismata occurs during Diakinesis.
