Answer:

The whole region of South China Sea is a big mess.

The dispute between the Philippines and Indonesia started when Indonesia was ruled by the Dutch and Philippines was handed over to the United States by Spain. By the Treaty of Paris, a rectangular maritime border was drawn which created confusion.

Later, when the United Nations Law of the Sea came into effect, Indonesia argued that the Treaty of Paris was not in accordance to the law and must be scrapped but Philippines continued to cling on to the Treaty due to internal pressure. Although the dispute has to a great extent been solved, the expansionist policies of the PRC has created more problem. As most of China's crude oil imports come from the Strait of Malacca and the South China sea, the PRC wants control over the area. Philippines still claims its part of the ocean but the entire area is still disputed. This proves the commitment of the Philippines in defending its territorial sovereignty.
