Importance of accessory pigments:

   Though chlorophyll a is the major pigment responsible for trapping light, other thylakoid pigments like chlorophyll b, xanthophylls and carotenoids, which are called accessory pigments, absorb light and transfer the energy to chlorophyll a.

Accessory pigments:

• Enable a wider range of wavelength of light to be utilized for photosynthesis.

• Protect chlorophyll a from photo–oxidation.

Note: The portion of spectrum between 400 nm and 700 nm is called photosynthetically active radiation (PAR).
