One Filipino global corporation can be:  SM PRIME HOLDINGS

History: Tycoon Henry Sy made his fortune in the Philippines, but he never lost sight of his native country. After creating an empire of shopping centres in the Philippines, SM Prime discovered an opportunity to open up shop in mainland China as well. This may be for sentimental as well as business reasons.

World-wide reach: At the turn of the millennium, the SM group began investing in mainland China with the intention of staying for the long term. There is plenty of room to build new malls if China has a consumer base that is ten times larger than that of the Philippines, but the group has chosen to focus on smaller cities rather than compete in the biggest ones.

With a gross floor area of 128,000 square metres, the first SM mall in China, which was then privately owned by the Sy family, opened in Xiamen in 2001. In terms of size, it is almost comparable to SM City Sta. Mesa. Three malls in China—Xiamen, Jinjiang, and Chengdu—had opened by 2007, and the China business had grown to the point where the Sy family felt it was time to incorporate it into SM Prime.

Attributes: SM Prime currently owns seven malls in China and 72 malls in the Philippines. The cities of Xiamen, Jinjiang, Chengdu, Zibo, Chongqing, Tianjin, and Suzhou are home to the malls in China.
