The error is in the option D.


The correct sentence would be ‘The girl said that she preferred the black gown over the blue one.


When clear cut choice is given and the selection is made upon the given set of options, then ‘over’ is used.


Than is the conjunction which is used when clear distinction is made between the two sets.
