why did the brothers work hard to save money though they never spent much on themselves

1. The narrator was impressed by the two brothers, Nicola and Jacopo  because they are devoted to work at such a small age and are ready to do any type of odd jobs. they showed dedication , determination and sincerity while working.
    2.  The brother worked hard to save money for their sister , Lucia who is suffering from Tuberclosis . they paid the hospital fees at the right time also.
