let no. of chairs in 2nd row be x
so, no. of chairs in 1st row = x + 8
so, no. of chairs in 3rd row = 2(x + x+ 8) = 4x + 16
difference between first and third rows:
(4x + 16) - (x+ 8) = 3x + 8
total no. of chairs = 240 = x + x + 8 + 4x + 16 = 6x + 24
so, 6x + 24 = 240
so, x + 4 = 40
so, x = 36
so, 3x + 8 = 116
therefore difference between 1st and 3rd rows is 116.
