The Chicago river is popular in being dyed emerald green every year on the St. Patrick's day.
This tradition began 60 years ago in 1962. Back then the river was a sewage dumping site but the mayor of the area Richard J. Daley was unable to figure out where the waste was being dumped and who exactly dumped it. So he ordered to pour a green all over the Chicago river. This helped in exactly pinpointing where the exact pollution problem lied.
Each year the city pours 40 pounds of concentrated liquid dye in water to celebrate this day and revive the memories that occurred around 60 years ago.
