Cl⁻ ion is stable than Cl atom because :
Cl - Atomic number -- 17
electronic configuration : 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 2s² 3p⁵
Valence electron - 7
valency - 1
So to attain the stability of inert gas or octet configuration, it has to accept one electron where as:
cl⁻= number of electrons = 18
so electronic configuration:1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 2s² 3p⁶
so the valence shell has attained stability as it acquired octet configuration.
