How many Sigma and Pi bonds are present in (a)C₂H₂ and (b) C₂H₄?

sigma bond : sigma bond is a covalent bond which is formed by head on overlapping of two atomic orbitals.

pi bond : pi bond is also a covalent bond which is formed by side-to-side overlapping of two atomic orbitals.

  • if there is a single bond between two atoms, then bond will be sigma bond.
  • if double bond between two atoms, then one bond will be sigma and the other one will be pi bond.
  • if triple bond between two atoms, then two bonds will be sigma and the other one will be pi bond.

now applying above concept to find no of sigma and pi bonds in given compound.

(a) see figure,

no of sigma bonds = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3

no of pi bonds = 1 + 1 = 2

(b) see figure ,

no of sigma bonds = (1 + 1 + 1 + 1) + 1 = 5

no of pi bond = 1
