Cl₂ is a molecule. It is the molecule of chlorine.

Cl is a chlorine atom. Two chlorine atoms combine to form one chlorine molecule.

pankhudi: I have read that H2 is an atom is that true ?
TPS: nope!
TPS: atoms don't have any subscript like 2 or 3...
TPS: H is an atom...H2 is a molecule
pankhudi: because the definition of atom says that atom are the smallest particle of element which may or may not exist freely
pankhudi: thx
TPS: yes... that's right! H and Cl are the smallest particle and they do not exist freely.
Some freely existing atoms are Argon, Helium, etc
