Liberalization refers to laws or rules being liberalized, or relaxed, by a government.

To make you clear with its concept, let me give you an example.

Economic liberalization is the removal of economic restrictions/regulations. (The Latin word liber means free; this is why we have the words liberty, liberal, libertine, libertarian, etc.) A hypothetical example: Let’s say there’s a restriction on the number of trees a logging company can cut down each year. If such a restriction is eased or ended, more trees can be cut down, so more lumber can be sold, so logging companies’ revenues increase. This has a variety of effects. The logging companies might hire more people; more people, seeing that logging is more profitable now, might enter the logging industry and start their own logging companies.

Oftentimes, when the term “economic liberalization” is used, it means ending trade barriers and promoting free trade. I myself prefer the term “trade liberalization” for that.

Examples of economic liberalization are abundant. The most famous (and largest) is the economic reforms commenced under Deng Xiaoping in China, which brought hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. There’s also the “Miracle of Chile” in the 1980s and Perestroika in the USSR.
