It means that according to Mendel, the genes of the progeny (baby/next generation) are inherited (taken)

from the parents. So the progeny will have 1 set of chromosomes from mother and 1 set of chromosomes from father.

Eg: Humans have 46 chromosomes. In that, half the number of chromosomes i.e. 23 chromosomes are taken from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father.
