Equivalent resistance is 4 .
4 ohms and 8 ohms are in series .
R = 4 + 8 = 12
x and 5 ohms are in series .
R = x + 5 .
Now x + 5 and 12 are in parallel.
1 / ( x + 5 ) + 1 / 12 = 1 Re
= > 1 / ( x + 5 ) + 1 / 12 = 1 / 4
= > 1 / ( x + 5 ) = 1 / 4 - 1 / 12
= > 1 / ( x + 5 ) = ( 3 - 1 ) / 12
= > 1 / ( x + 5 ) = 2 / 12
= > 1 / ( x + 5 ) = 1 / 6
= > x + 5 = 6
= > x = 6 - 5 = 1
