Because Mrs Slater wants to shift grandfather's bureau ( writing desk with drawers) to her room before Elizabeth's arrival. She believes that if her sister gets to know that the bureau belonged to their father, then she would surely try to grab it.
That's why Mrs and Mr Slater brings down the bureau.

Mrs. Slater thinks that his father was death. So, she decided to shift his bureau in her room before her sister arrival and put her bureau in his father room, because her bureau looks old and dirty. On the other hand her father's bureau was new and looks beautiful. So, that she can say that it was her bureau not his father's.

She want to claim everything of his father. She was not sad about his father death, instead she was planning to wear a new mourning dress so that she can show her sister. She was a greedy and selfish lady. She don't felt sad about death of his father, but she thinks how she can got everything of his father before her sister arrival. Because if she came then she have to gave her also some part of his property and things which she don't want.

So, that's why Mrs. Slater and Mr. Slater brings down the bureau.
