Class 9
Cell Membrane
Science
The cell membrane is also known as the plasma membrane. It is the outermost covering of
animal cells
1 It is a lipid bilayer. And is composed of lipoproteins and carbohydrates.
2. The structure of the cell membrane is 7.5-10 min thickness
3. It is thin and delicate structure. It is Dexible to change the shape as needed
4. It protects and maintains the internal environment of the cell.
5. The cell membrane is non-elastic
6. The cell membrane is metabolically active
7. The cell membrane has receptors to receive signals from external chemicals
8. It is of the same thickness for the whole lifetime of the organism
9. It acts as a selectively permeable membrane by allowing the entry of only selected
substances into the cell. That is it can allow water and other substance to pass through
selectively
10. Functions include permeability, signal reception, motility conduction cell division, sexual
reproduction et

1.Cell walls and cell membrane are different things as cell wall is a non living rigid material, freely permeable and composed of cellulose while cell wall is very thin, flexible, living membrane, semi permeable and made up of lipoproteins.Cell wall gives shape and rigidity to the plant cell while cell membrane regulates the entry of certain solutes and ions.

2.Plasma membrane is also called cell membrane it separates contents of cell from its surroundings and regulates the entry of certain solutes and ions and also maintains shape of the animal cell.

4.Hydrophillic is the tendency to mix with water or if you are asking hydrophobic its non polar molecules that repel the water molecules.
