1)In his childhood, he used to play shehnai with his father in a temple at Varanasi. When he was five years old, Bismillah Khan used to play gill i-danda near a pond in Dumraon. After playing he generally went to a nearby temple called Bihariji Temple. He would sit there and sing the Bhojpuri thaita'.
2)Khan Saab is the other name of bismallah Khan. Bismallah khan played the shennai after which the president of India Jawaharlal Nehru who was one of the listeners, gave a speech. So it remained as the happiest day in his life.
3)Now Ustaad Bismillah Khan was attached to River Ganga also. So, he asked his student that would he transport the River Ganga also to America. So, he wanted to say that he could not leave India – He was attached not only to the temples of Benaras but also to the holy river Ganga.
4)He is a recipient of the Bharat Ratna (2001), Padma Bhushan (1968), Padma Vibhushan (1980) and the Padma Shri (1961). “Even if the world ends, the music will still survive… music has no caste,” is one of his famous quotes. Khan died on August 21, 2006.
