Answer :

Conductor : Having conductivity range, 10⁴ to 10⁷ ℧/m.

  • Metallic conductors conduct electricity through movement of electrons.
  • Atomic orbitals of metal atoms form molecular orbitals which are very close in energy and form a band.
  • In metals, there is a partial overlapping b/w filled valence band and empty conduction band thus, electron can flow easily under an applied electric field and the metal shows conductivity

Insulator : Having very low conductivities ranging between 10⁻²⁰ to 10⁻¹⁰ ℧/m.

  • In insulators, the gap between filled valence band and the conduction band is large, electrons can't jump to it and such a substance has very small conductivity.

Semiconductor : Having conductivities in the intermediate range from 10⁻⁶ to 10⁴ ℧/m.

  • In case of semiconductors, the gap between the valence band and conduction band is small, some electrons may jump to conduction band and show some conductivity.
