Carbon is a solid. It is a naturally abundant dark grey to black non-metallic element that occurs in many inorganic and in all organic compounds, exists freely as Graphite and Diamond and as a constituent of coal, limestone, and petroleum, and is capable of chemical self-bonding to form an enormous number of chemically, biologically, and commercially important molecule.

Dear Student,

● Classification of carbon -

Carbon exist in various forms called allotropes.

Most common allotropes of carbon are -

  • Diamond
  • Graphite
  • Fullerene

● Diamond -

  • Diamond is hard, transparent and colourless solid.
  • It has 3-D tetrahedral structure.
  • It is insulator for electricity.

● Graphite -

  • Graphite is soft, black and brittle solid.
  • It has 2-D layered structure.
  • It is electrical conductor.

Hope this helped you. Keep asking
