classify the matter on the basis of physical and chemical characteristics
Answers
Physical classification of matter
There are three states of matter. They are solid, liquid and gas. Matter which has a fixed shape, fixed volume and is almost impossible to compress is known as solid. There can be crystalline or amorphous solids. Matter which has a fixed volume but no fixed shape and is very difficult to compress is known as liquid. Matter which does not have a fixed shape or volume and can be compressed easily is known as gas.
Chemical classification of matter
There are two categories of matter. They are pure substances and mixtures. Matter which can be identified by a fixed set of properties that distinguish it from other substances is known as a pure substance. It cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical means. But some substances can be broken down through chemical means. Matter which contains two or more pure substances which are mixed together physically is known as a mixture. There can be homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
