- Plastids can be defined as double membrane bound organelles , they can manufacture and store food ,and are sometimes pigmented.
- Plastids are of three types :
- Chloroplast- found in the mesophyll cells and synthesize food by photosynthesis.
- Chromoplasts- found in flowering plants, ageing leaves and fruits, they have carotenoid pigments that provide color to the plant parts.
- Leucoplasts- these are colorless plastids and are further divided into amyloplasts( store starch), proteinoplasts (store proteins) and elaioplasts (store fats and oils)
