"A "substitution reaction" is a "type of chemical reaction" in which "another atom" or "functional group" of a molecule is replaced. It is also called a "single replacement reaction".

The given reaction is as follows,

{ \left( { CH }_{ 3 } \right)  }_{ 3 }C-C{ H }_{ 2 }OH\quad +\quad HBr\quad \rightarrow \quad { \left( { CH }_{ 3 } \right)  }_{ 2 }CBr{ CH }_{ 2 }{ CH }_{ 3 }\quad +\quad { H }_{ 2 }O

From the above reaction, OH^{ - } of the { \left( { CH }_{ 3 } \right)  }_{ 3 }C-C{ H }_{ 2 }OH added to the { H }^{ + } of the HBr.

Therefore, substitution takes place followed by rearrangement of atoms or group of atoms."
