Types of bacteria. Bacteria are classified into 5 groups according to their basic shapes: spherical (cocci), rod (bacilli), spiral (spirilla), comma (vibrios) or corkscrew (spirochaetes).

They are classified into 3 different categories on basis of shape..
cocci (coccus for a single cell) are round cells sometimes slightly flattened when they are adjacent to one another
Bacilli are rod shaped bacteria.
Spirilla are curved bacteria which can range from a gently curved shape to a corkscrew like spiral. Many spirilla are rigid and capable of movement
