Cleanliness is an emblem of purity of mind
Mahatma Gandhi had said cleanliness is next to godliness.
Undoubtedly cleanliness of all types is a divine quality. However, the
cleanliness of mind is the most essential requirement in order to have any
other type of cleanliness. As our actions are governed by our thoughts, outer
cleanliness of body and environment can’t be achieved without cleaning our mind
first. So cleanliness of mind is an emblem of purity of mind. People who have
purity of mind keep all types of cleanliness around them.
It is vital here to first understand what we mean by ‘CLEANLINESS OF MIND’. Joseph Addison’s definition of purity of mind is quite appropriate in the context. According to him cleanliness of mind can be defined as the purity of mind. Purity of mind is a great virtue espoused by all great men and women. However, this virtue has been dwindling away owing to the ever increasing materialism. The youth have been influenced the most by it. Physical pleasures have become the top priority for most of them. Eat, drink and be merry appears to be their motto. This dissipation surely leads them to road of perdition.
All great men and women of all times practiced cleanliness of mind. Only purity of thoughts can contribute in developing a strong, indomitable, and considerate character. Cleanliness of mind is a rock on which we can build our mansion and be safe. Physical pleasures are sandy ground on which we can never build the edifice of our success. In all cultures cleanliness of mind and body is greatly stressed on. There are many sects of ascetics who practice cleanliness of mind very meticulously. They do this to consecrate themselves for the spiritual aspirations.
The contemporary youth need cleanliness of mind very earnestly. The youth is the future of the world. Prosperous and bright future can only be secured by men and women of great character. Great character is shaped only by cleanliness of mind. Hence, cleanliness is the need of the hour for the contemporary youth.
