When a competitive inhibitor is bound to an enzyme the increases. This means the binding affinity for the enzyme is decreased, but it can be overcome by increasing the concentration of the substrate. Any given competitive inhibitor concentration can be overcome by increasing the substrate concentration.

Sulpha drugs such as sulphanilamide work as competitive inhibitors of folic acid synthesis in bacteria as thet substitute p-amino benzoic acid.
