Explanation:

Exercise 2: From the Clyde to Sandy Hook

In paragraph 1 the word ‘pens’ is used to describe the sate of the steerage class accommodation. This suggests that the accommodation is very poor and similar to that of an animal pen at a farmyard, this is reinforced by the expression in paragraph 2″farmyard chorus.”

“Rough billows” is describing the strength of the waves as being very violent rough surges, battering against the ship.

Stevenson said that the song contained a pertinent question as the song said “oh why left I my hame?” and at that moment everyone was thinking the same thing, as they wondered if they would even make it to shore again, and if they should have just stayed at home.

-“The wind was Fair.” I chose this as it the word “fair” is soft, and implies that the mood is calm. -“The sun mounted into a cloudless heaven.”: It shows that the sun is shinning again which means a calmer sea without the storms and violent waves, so again people will be happier and feel safer. -” The sun shone pleasantly on the long, heaving deck.” : The word ‘pleasantly’ shows that people are relaxing and starting to enjoy the sun, again meaning that the mood is changing to a brighter happier mood.

The passage begins with a very negative description of the voyage to Sandy Hook. Originally the conditions are horrible, the storm is violent and Stevenson is having to lodge in the worst part if the ship. Everyone around him is terribly sea sick and miserable. There was also a fear of drowning as expressed in the line”‘oh why lifetime I my hame?’which seemed a pertinent question in the circumstances.” Whereas later in the passage the mood changes and in contrast to what Stevenson experienced before the description of the new world was positive and happy. The new day brings a new world and Stevenson describes it with excitement and color. The passage went from a negative description in the beginning and ended in a positive description of the new world.

“The place is lit with two lanterns”: This suggests that it was written over 100 years ago because electricity was invented over 100 years, therefor if they still used lanterns to light up the room, it would have to be before electricity because of the risk of having fire in the a wooden ship. “The result was published in the wheel house”: The progress of a ship would not have to be guessed now a days but instead it would be posted on electronic boards or we would have received in on some mobile device. “Puss in the corner…devil…four Corners”: all of these games are very old and aren’t played anymore

I hope you understand
