The Large Hadron Collider also known as LHC was installed by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in 2008 at the France - Switzerland border. It is a powerful particle accelerator which is made up of a 27 kilometres long ring of superconducting magnets and several accelerating structures which boost the energy of particles inside it.
A pair of high-energy particle beams, travel at almost the speed of light before they collide. They travel in opposing directions, in separate beam pipes which are at ultrahigh vacuum. Superconducting electromagnets guide the beams around the accelerator ring.
The Higgs Boson particle was discovered as a result of research work at the LHC.
