A FEW USEFULNESS OF MICRO ORGANISMS ARE :
1) Some microbes contribute in making of delicious foods .
example-The lactic acid bacteria as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria are used in making fermented milk products.
2) Some microbes fix nitrogen in the soil, increasing its fertility
example - Leguminous plants such as mustard, soyabean etc. are found in associations with nitrogen fixing bacteria Rhizobium The bacteria move into the root cells and form tiny homes for themselves called root nodules. Within these nodules, the bacteria change completely from their free-living form and produce nitrogen compounds that are used by the plant in exchange for shelter and organic compounds made by the plant.
3) They help in processing of beverages such as alcohol, liquor etc.
example - The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is probably best known for its use in making alcoholic beverages.
4) Use as pesticides and insecticides.
example - The bacterium Bacillus Thuringiensis (also known as Bt) produces a toxin that is effective in encountering the pests by gardeners and farmers and has been used since years.
5) They are helpful in treating sewage.
example - After the sewage has been physically filtered to remove solid waste, called primary treatment, microbes break down the insoluble organic matter during secondary treatment.
6) Used as medicines.
example - Antibiotics are made by Bacillus bacteria and fungi, such as Penicillium
7) Microbes are behind decaying of wastes
example - The process of composting starts with the initial breakdown of simple organic matter by microorganisms that produce, among other things, carbon dioxide, heat, and humus (broken down organic matter).
8) Help in making of biodegradable plastics.
example - The best kind of biodegradable plastics are the plastics made by bacteria since they can also be broken down by bacteria unlike other plastic materials. These contain either polylactide (PLA), made as a product of fermentation, or polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), made by bacteria as storage compounds. Thus, helping our in making our environment clean.
9) They help in maintaining the balance of nature.
example - Fecal biotherapy (also known as fecal transplant) is the insertion of feces. a healthy person (the donor) into the colon of a person suffering from a gastrointestinal disorder or disease. The principle is that the patient’s microbial community is unbalanced and the healthy community of microbes from the donor sample can help restore a healthy balanced microbial community.
10) Last but not the least in fact the most practical advantage of Bacterias.is that they help in setting up an aquarium.
example - In nature, fish live in complex environments filled with plants, insects, and microorganisms. Because of their biological complexity, natural habitats are good at absorbing and recycling fish waste, such as ammonia, so that it doesn’t build up. In a closed container, however, like an aquarium, ammonia released in fish waste can build up quickly, making the water inhospitable and toxic.
