The famous play The Merchant of Venice, written by the 16th century playwright William Shakespeare was staged in our school recently by the Literary Club of our school. A comedy set in Venice, the play surrounds the crafty money-lender Shylock who lends money to Bassanio, who wanted the money to ask Portia in marriage. He requests Antonio agrees to be the guarantor. To Shylock, who hates Antonio, strikes a deal with the young men saying that in case Antonio fails to pay the sum, he would take a pound of flesh from him. Antonio agrees but unfortunately his ships sink in the seas throwing him in debts. Shylock goes to the court for justice demanding the pound of flesh from Antonio. Portia, the fiancé of Bassanio comes to the rescue and, disguised as a man, she defends Antonio by craftily outwitting Shylock by asking him to take the exactly one pound of flesh without a drop of blood falling on the ground. Thus the play ends with everyone happy.

The students of std 10 have put together the play wonderfully. The costumes were designed by Ms. Malavika Tiwari and Ms. Anjali Desai. The stage setting was painted with simple designs following Shakespearean times. Our students have practiced and worked hard for two months to put up the show and they were successful in replicating the play well. Our English teacher Ms. Andrea Vaz worked well with the students, teaching them acting skills and motivating them to do their best. The role of Portia and Shylock, played by Ms. Lara Menezes and Mr. Adrian Vaz were well appreciated.

The play was a great success and would be staged again for the Literary Festival in Mumbai this year.
