There is only so much that a school-level history textbook can “teach” you. A graduate or post-graduate course in history gives you more information on historical events, historical people and bygone polities. Also, social sciences are largely ignored and developments in those fields are largely limited in our country.

My observation is that, in India, a school where education and instruction are imparted in a vernacular language is also more likely to focus on local, regional heroes (at the very least there will be a general awareness of them) than a school where the medium of instruction is English.
