Sundials have their origin in shadow clocks , which were the first devices used for measuring the parts of a day. The oldest known shadow clock is from Egypt, and was made from green schist Ancient Egyptian obelisks , constructed about 3500 BC, are also among the earliest shadow clocks.

Clock today is the basis for measuring the change in time. But have you ever wondered, before the invention of watch or clock, how was it measured? How did people then, know what time of day or night is it? How did they know that the month is about to end? Or how did they know the year was coming to an end. The answer to these questions lies in the very events that repeated regularly.

The answer to these questions seem complex for us, but for our elders, these were easy to calculate. Shadows played an eminent role in acknowledging the time of day while the regular lunar moments signified the change in the month. As we all know that the moon has different phases which change every day.

A month according to our elders started with a full moon and ended with a full moon. Likewise, the completion of one revolution by Earth around the sun signified the completion of a year. Our ancestors solely depended on these repetitive events that helped them measure the time accurately.

Ancient clocks

Apart from the general ways of predicting time through repetitive events, our ancestors also built edifices that measured passing moments. These were famously called as Sundials. The sundials had points engraved in them which would calculate the day timings with the movement of sun and moon. Other objects like water clocks and sand clocks were also famous ways of measuring it. Thes devices could be found in abundant designs and were magnificently accurate for measuring moments.

Measuring time with the help of regularly repetitive events is easy when it comes to measuring months and years. But for measuring it within a day, a universal device is a must. Measuring time with the help of watch seems simple, but the working of a watch is equally complex. Basically, all watches work on a universal phenomenon of periodic motion. A simple pendulum is the most common example of periodic motion. By periodic motion, we mean the motion that repeats after a certain time interval.
